CPAP in the summer tips for keeping cool

Using CPAP in the summer can be a challenge because of the heat.  These tips are meant to keep you cool and keep you asleep so you can wake up energized and fully enjoy your summer!

  1. Keep your jug of distilled water in the refrigerator.  When you pour cold water into your humidifier chamber, it can help you get to sleep more comfortably with a cool breeze.  You can also make ice cubes with distilled water and pop them in the humidifier.
  2. You may be able to turn off your CPAP humidifier when it’s hot and humid outside.
  3. If you’re sweating and your mask gets slippy on your skin this can be uncomfortable and leave you vulnerable to air leaks.  You can use a cloth mask liner to absorb moisture and wick it away.
  4. Keep a dry mask next to your bed and switch to it if you wake up during the night and are bothered by the moisture accumulated in the mask you went to sleep with.
  5. Use a lightweight mask in the summer.  You might consider a cloth mask (there are several available from SleepWeaver) or a maskless option from Bleep Sleep.
  6. Take a lukewarm or cool shower before bed.
  7. Put an iced gel pack over your eyes or behind your neck as you’re laying down to sleep.
  8. An extra fan in your bedroom can help reduce sweating during sleep and keep your room cool.  A dehumidifier in the bedroom can also help.
  9. Moisture-wicking bedding helps absorb sweat and keeps you cool throughout the night, minimizing awakenings.
  10. Sweat and oils from your skin can accumulate on the CPAP mask, causing discomfort and reducing its effectiveness. Clean your mask and supplies more frequently if you suspect this is a problem for you.  Bugs love to grow in warm, humid environments, so check all your supplies (including your air filter!) frequently to avoid the ick factor.
